Are you ready for your pet's first train trip? Here's a checklist!

A smooth train journey for your pet looks like arriving early, securing the perfect booking that ensures a comfortable and undisturbed experience, preparing in advance for every situation, providing comfort and safety that feels almost cozy, having all essential supplies, and giving attentive care throughout the trip. Let's run you down on everything you need to know.

IRCTC Guidelines for Traveling with Pets:

Traveling by train in India is a convenient and affordable way to move around with your pet. Let's get familiar with the guidelines for traveling with pets on trains as stated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

1st AC Travel: You can carry dogs and cats in 1st AC if you book an entire four-berth cabin or two-berth coupe on a single PNR and pay the usual booking charges.

  1. Luggage Van: You can book a dog box with the guard, subject to availability. This option is available on many trains, and you can inquire about their availability at the parcel office.
  2. Puppies or kittens: You can carry puppies or kittens in a carrier in any class after paying the standard booking charges.

Cost of Travel:

  • 60 rupees per kg for carrying your pet in 1st AC.
  • 30 rupees per kg for carrying your pet in a Travel Van.
  • You will be asked to fill out a form declaring the value of your pet if you have purchased it and not adopted it.
  •  Remember, this applies to both pets traveling in AC compartments and luggage vans.
  • IRCTC also warns that they will not be responsible for damage or loss to your pet. They may compensate monetarily based on the value declared on the form filled out here.

Where to Book Tickets:

Why an entire berth or whole cabin on the first AC trip?

Booking an entire four-berth cabin or two-berth coupe for pets in 1st AC ensures ample space and comfort for the pets, minimizes disturbance to other passengers, and enhances overall safety and hygiene on the train.

Tip: We advise you to choose the first option, AC travel, and not the second option, the luggage van. It puts your pet on a muzzle with other goods, which will build anxiety and stress.

Are the bookings under reservation or baggage?

  • A pet booking under AC 1 is a normal booking. No reservation is required.
  • Luggage van booking is considered baggage booking with weight declaration, which comes with luggage van booking and is available on availability.

Before the Day of Journey:

  1. Vet Visit:
  • Schedule a pre-travel check-up.
  • Ensure vaccinations are up-to-date. You might be required to show proof of the card.
  • Fitness certificate: taken 24-48 hours before journey.
  • Discuss any travel anxiety or motion sickness, and get appropriate medications if necessary.

The Day of Journey:

Reach the train station at least 3 hours prior to the commencement of the journey.

Visit the luggage/parcel office there to inform them about your pet. Here, your pet will be weighed and charged accordingly.

How to Relieve Your Pet during the journey:

  • Identify and mark the stations in advance where the train has longer stops for bathroom breaks.
  • Carry necessary items: pee pads, diapers, poop bags, and wipes for cleaning up after your pet in case of emergency relief is required.
  • Walk your pet on a leash to allow them to relieve themselves safely.
  • Clean up after your pet and dispose of waste properly.

Keep in mind

  1. Each passenger can be accompanied by one pet only once the train ticket is confirmed. (1 Pet per PNR).
  2. The receipt for pet bookings must be presented both during arrival and departure.
  3. Pets should not be left unattended.
  4. The pet should not disturb others.
  5. Keep your pet on leashes at all times to prevent it from escaping during train stops.
  6. It is the responsibility of the passenger to provide drinking water and food (biscuits, etc.) for the dog traveling in the brake van.
  7. In the event of a disturbance or uncomfortable conditions for fellow passengers, you could be removed from the train without any refund.

After the Journey:

  • Present the pet booking receipt during arrival and departure.

AC vs. Luggage Van: Why We Prefer AC:

  • Comfort and Safety: Ensures space and comfort for pets.
  • Minimizes Stress and Anxiety: Avoids the stress and anxiety associated with travel in the luggage van.
  • Hygiene: Enhanced hygiene in a controlled environment.
  • Convenience: Easier to manage and monitor your pet during the journey.

What to carry

  • Pack essentials like food, water, medicines, and a leash/collar.
  • Bring favorite toys to keep pets engaged.
  • Carry pee pads, diapers, poop bags, and wipes for bathroom breaks.
  • Bring towels or mats for the floor on your seat.
By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable train journey for both you and your pet.
